Gorgeous and glowing

Monday 13th August 2012

Good evening dolls, I'm finally able to post!

After various problems with my internet connection, being out and about and generally being busy, I'm pleased to say this is my first post! Crimson has done a fantastic job so far and I cannot stress enough how excited we are to be doing this blog together, thank you to you all for reading so far, being so patient throughout our maintenance and to any new readers, hello! If you like what you read, why not follow us? :) Lets's get started.

I can't be the only one who is nothing short of baffled by the weird and wacky weather we seem to be having at the moment, I never know what to wear because I'm not used to dressing for such a tropical climate, this is England - not the amazon rainforest!

No matter what the month may be, I never feel myself unless I have a bit of colour. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with being pale and interesting at all, it can be seen as quite seasonal in Autumn and Winter but during the Spring and Summer months I like to have a bit of colour about me, it gives me a confidence boost if nothing else. Over the years I've tried and tested so many different brands of fake tanning products, some I've grown to love and some I just totally loathe.

If you're going on your jolly holidays, I feel a wash on, wash off tan is best if you want to give yourself some colour the first day you hit the beach, as if you're like me, your white bits will be whiter than white! But if it's an all-year-round colour your after, a gradual tanning product may be best.

Rimmel Sunshimmer Instant Tan Make Up for Face and Body, 125ml, £6.00, Boots
This tan gives immediate, flawless colour with an added sparkle and even gives great coverage to enhance a current tan. It dries instantly, doesn't rub off on clothes and is easy to apply. It can be easily washed off with soap and water and comes in two lovely styles - matte and shimmer. Verdict? Cheap and cheerful.

Sally Hansen Airbrush Legs, 75ml, £10.29, Boots
I love, love, LOVE this product! The idea is to spray the can directly onto your legs, to cover and veins and imperfections, but I find it a lot easier to wear a latex glove (packs of which can be picked up from any drug store) and spray the liquid from the can directly onto the glove, then rub all over my body, it gives an instant, gorgeous, flawless tan with sparkle. The price is a bit steep but I do find that one can lasts me a good few months. The waterproof version does wash off easily but is transfer resistant, so if you're planning on wearing any pale colours then this is the one to go for, whereas the original version spots easily in the rain but don't let that put you off because it really is such a great product. It comes in light, medium and dark, I always use dark as I love the colour it goes. Verdict? Sold! I'll be popping this into my suitcase and taking it with me for the foreseeable.

Piz Buin Self Tanning Lotion and Colour Dial, 240ml, £18.49, Lloyds Pharmacy
To be honest, yes it did smell quite nice but the colour dial made no difference what-so-ever. It goes on with a creamy consistency and feels a little greasy afterwards, to get a decent tan it needs to be reapplied for a further two to three days and as for the price? Far too expensive! Verdict? Very disappointed.

St Moriz Instant Self Tanning Mist, 200ml, £4.99, desirablebody
St Moriz Self Tanning Mousse, 200ml, £4.99, desirablebody
You can't go wrong with any St Moriz product in my eyes. I get mine from discounted stores and pay pretty much the same price stated on the internet. The mist comes in a tin and can be sprayed from all angles and is easy to apply, whereas the mousse, which comes in a plastic bottle, should be applied to a tanning mit and then 'rubbed' onto the body. I usually leave mine to develop overnight and then was the excess off the next day, re-applying the following night if I want a darker tan. The only downside is that when left overnight it does seem to develop a rather pungent smell which can only be described as a mixture of 'bus seats and beef joints' (and you can thank my other half for that..!). Verdic? I personally prefer the mousse over the mist as the pump action bottle helps to control how much to apply and use. The only problem is the mousse comes with no instructions on how to apply, whereas the mist has detailed instructions on exfoliating, moisturising and spraying 6.12 inches away from the body.

St Tropez Self Tanning Bronzing Mousse, 120ml, Boots, £20.49
If your legs are like mine and never seem to tan then this could be the product for you. This is really easy to apply and goes on like velvet. It contains aloe vera to condition the skin, dries in an instant and claims to have 70% less of the fake tan aroma. As with all fake tanning products this does go patchy after a while so regular exfolitation to help your tan fade evenly is advised. The one thing that this product has over all others is that it contains a green pigment which stops the skin from going an orange colour. This is one of the most recognised, well-known and most used brands out of all. Verdict? Nice, but not nice enough to pay that price for! It really does give a gorgeous golden glow, but for the cost, it's not something I'll be buying often.

So there you have it. A tan enthusiasts guide to some of the best and worst on the market. And as always, don't forget to moisturise to keep that gorgeous tan from fading!
Keep your eyes peeled for the next post on how to remove your tan quickly and effectively with a household baking product.
